Join us for a fun and educational kayak,
snorkel, and coffee mill tour in legendary, historical
Kealakekua Bay. Our tour begins
with a warm greeting by your guide at Napo`opo`o Pier, gateway to
Kealakekua Bay. After an orientation to the bay and a kayaking lesson,
we paddle across Kealakekua
Bay. Enjoying the turquoise colorof the warm water below us. Often
dolphins spin, leap and swim
around our boats as we paddle across the bay. We have a special
landing permit to land at the old Hawaiian boat landing
one mile across the bay at the Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park.
where we rest and picnic in the shade. From here we snorkel
over the pristine coral reef in front of the Captain Cook Monument.
Our tour ends with a coffee and treats
back at the Kona Pacific Farmer’s Co-op coffee mill.
PADDLE across beautiful, protected
Kealakekua Bay to land at the ancient Hawaiian village of Ka`awaloa,
where the Hawaiian ali`i (chiefs) ruled. A large pod of lively spinner
dolphins (nai`a in Hawaiian) live in this bay. From a respectful
distance you may view them jumping or swimming in their family groups.
The water in this Marine Life Conservation District is azure blue,
calm, and clear. As we paddle across, you will see many small lava
tubes in the pali (cliff) surrounding the bay. Here is where commoners
were lowered on ropes to bury the sacred bones of the Hawaiian chiefs.
TOUR a coffee mill! We begin our trip
at the Kona Pacific Farmer’s Co-op,
right near the Kealakekua Bay, where locally grown coffee and macadamia
nuts are processed. Here we will enjoy a cup of fresh Kona coffee
and a snack of roasted macadamia nuts while getting to know each
other and learning about the bay and the area. We will see the colorful
and interesting old machinery and buildings that process coffee
from berry to bean to brew. You will delight in the KPFC store with
its colorful displays and local farmers’ bags of coffee and macnuts.
Your guides will show you coffee growing on the trees and other
local fruit trees. After this we head down to the bay for the kayaking
part of the trip.
HIKE ancient Hawaiian trails in the
historically important village of Ka`awaloa, our landing spot. We
will walk a short ways from where we land on a tree-shaded coastal
trail to see ancient rock walls and huge rounded trail stones forming
the Ala Kahakai coastal trail. Our destination is the Captain Cook
Monument, with its convenient small jetty for entering enter the
water to snorkel. Here we will enjoy our picnic lunch under the
shade trees. We are here as welcome guests at the Kealakekua Bay
State Historical Park.
SNORKEL in the calm, protected waters
of Ka`awaloa cove in Kealakekua Bay. Kealakekua Bay is a Marine
Life Conservation District in the state of Hawaii. This vibrantly
healthy coral reef ranks at the top of the best places to snorkel
in Hawaii. Many species of bright-colored, friendly tropical fish
live in this exceptionally clear, clean water. We will bring fish
ID cards and hope you see Hawaii’s state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua`a!
If you have never snorkeled before, your guide will help you, and
soon you will be in the warm buoyant water with your mask, snorkel,
and fins, watching the colorful tropical fish, with your helpful
guide by your side! Don’t forget your underwater camera!
This tour goes out on Monday through Friday, all year, safe water
